Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting

Oh. My. Goodness! This Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting is AMAZING!! I don't particularly like cream cheese frosting, but this has me nearly drooling. Yep. It really is that good. The thing that I like love about it is that the cream cheese flavor is not overly strong. It's quite mild. I also love the consistency. Most cream cheese frosting won't hold up, but this will.

I used this Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting on cupcakes for my Bunko group and, oh my! The ladies were in love! I have never gotten so many compliments on anything before. And multiple compliments from the some ladies. And the sweet hubby said it was the best frosting ever!

1 (3oz) package cream cheese, softened at room temperature
1/2 cup butter, softened at room temperature
1/2 cup shortening
4 cups powdered sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons cream or milk

Combine cream cheese, butter and shortening; mix until combined. Beat in powdered sugar and salt. Add vanilla and enough milk to reach desired consistency. Make sure to beat it really good.

Recipe from The Royal Cook - an original!

  1. I might have to give this a try. It's difficult to find a cream cheese frosting that you can actually decorate with, but this looks like it would pipe quite well!

  2. Does this really only have 3 oz. of cream cheese or is that supposed to be 8 oz.?

    1. If you are piping it on (like in the picture), you'll be able to frost about 12 cupcakes. If you are just spreading it on, you'll get 24+. Enjoy!

  4. Does this frosting have to be kept refrigerated, or would it be ok to frost the cupcakes the night before and leave them out at room temperature?

    1. Since it has cream cheese in it, I keep it in the fridge. It would be fine left out for a party or get together, but I wouldn't keep it out longer than that.

  5. I am always leery about using shortening in frosting recipes. Do you taste it? Does it leave that weird waxy feeling on the roof of your mouth? I have yet to try it, but it is in nearly every buttercream recipe.

    1. Hi Mandi! I love the shortening in buttercream frosting. I think it gives a better texture than just plain butter and I can't taste it or feel it in my mouth.

  6. I am going to make roses (not RI roses) for a Red Velvet cake. Do you think this frosting will hold up? Thank you very much!

    1. I think it would hold up from a piped rose just fine. I would just keep it in the fridge until serving time. Enjoy!

    1. I think it would go just fine. It mostly depends on your preferences and what you like. :)

  9. My all time favorite recipe! I love the taste and texture. I find that once my cakes have had icing piped on and are refrigerated overnight I can easily transport the cupcakes in a container without getting icing everywhere!
